Netherlands
The Netherlands is the cradle of Women in Europe for a Common Future and the main office is located there in Utrecht. The Netherlands is part of the Low Countries (including Belgium and Luxembourg) and about half the country lie only one metre above sea level. With about 16 million people spread over 41,000 sq km the Netherlands is a densely populated country.
It is founding member of the European Union, but rejected the EU constitution during a referendum in 2005. The Dutch are known for their environmental and social as well as economic ambitions. An active attitude to international aid and development on the part of the government and administration allow Dutch NGOs to take part in supporting countries all over the world. WECF is actively engaged in communication, awareness raising and public participation processes in Holland. Trainings and networking in the areas of chemicals, rural development and water are an important part of its work.
A considerable share of the funding of WECF activities comes from the Dutch government or other organisations in the Netherlands.
