Improving water and sanitation in rural Moldova
The association Ecotox chose the village Chriscauti in a
quire remote area of Moldova, where no other help of any kind came through so
far. The children in the kindergarten do not have access to safe sanitation. The teachers are therefore in need for a solution; which will be build for them in the form of a urine diverting dry toilet that will be constructed
this year in the frame of the ELA project. It will be the first toilet for a
kindergarten in the WECF network, so we are all full of expectations for the
results and will disseminate the valuable new experience throughout our
network. Also several household toilets will be constructed in the village. The
teachers of the kindergarten and other active women are organized into an
association who will support the project.
As Ecotox is an organization of scientists, the water
quality in the village is evaluated, and accordingly the wells are cleaned
where necessary. The local population is involved in the investigations, and
eventually, a Water Safety Plan will be developed. The effect of urine on
Moldovan soils is investigated for different types of crops in the laboratory. The results of the project will be disseminated
throughout a wider public, including high level seminars.
