On 7 and 8 December 2007 WECF together with its local partner Ecoproject Partnership from Belarus conducted a training on solid waste. The interest in this training was extremely high; 37 participants (representatives from NGOs, schools and local authorities) were trained on waste management in the Netherlands and Belarus, composting, recycling and hazardous waste in the conference center of the IBB Hotel in Minsk/Belarus. One international expert from the Netherlands (Sophie van den Berg) and one local expert (Alexander Gnedov) gave presentations on the issues with examples from Dutch and Belarusian experiences and held different workshops. Also other people with experiences on waste, e.g. through projects or their own waste separation company, briefly informed the participants about their work. Furthermore, Sophie van den Berg showed the participants how to make their own paper from used paper.
The working groups allowed the participants to start identifying which proposed technologies and processes could be a solution to the concrete problems of the different communities that took part in the base-line studies. In particular, the participants were interested in waste separation and recycling and also in the process of how to make their own paper. By this exercise and the two other trainings on water and sanitation, which was held in October 2007, and on energy, which will be held in February 2008, potential demonstration projects will be developed.
The next training conference on energy will take place on 7 and 8 February 2008 in Minsk.
