Chemicals may increase breast cancer risk
Natural and synthetic estrogens are well-known risk factor for developing breast cancer. Manmade chemicals with oestrogen effect may also raise risk for breast cancer. That is shown by new report “Breast cancer and exposure to hormonally active chemicals: An appraisal of the scientific evidence”.

Natural and synthetic estrogens are well-known risk factor for developing breast cancer. But manmade chemicals with oestrogen effect may also raise the risk for breast cancer. That is shown by a new report “Breast cancer and exposure to hormonally active chemicals: An appraisal of the scientific evidence”.
The report, written by Prof Andreas Kortenkamp, University of London, was peer reviewed by CASCADE Coordinator Jan Åke Gustafsson. It points out the connection between breast cancer and hormonally active chemicals.
Campaigners now urge the politicians to act on this link between chemical exposure and breast cancer, a disease escalating in Europe. On the 2nd of April 2008 the report was presented for members of the European Parliament in Brussels on the lunch event “Breast cancer – prevent the preventable” hosted by MEP Avril Doyle.
Prof Kortenkamps report is based on several publications, among them the CASCADE publication; “Breast cancer risk and the combined effect of environmental estrogens” from 2004. One of the author of this publication; Prof Nicolas Olea from the University of Granada, was invited to the lunch to present the scientific evidence liking breast cancer to the exposure to certain man-made chemicals. After the scientific presentation there was a discussion about possible political actions to prevent environmental caused breast cancer.
