The International Conference "Transboundary Dniester River Basin Management and the EU Water Framework Directive" held in Chisinau, Moldova, on October 2-3, 2008, gathered more than 150 scientists, politicians, specialists and NGOs from the transboundary Dniester River basin and abroad, representing 111 organisations.

The conference was organized by Eco-Tiras and Academy of Sciences of Moldova in cooperation with Women in Europe for a Common Future.

The contributions treated different aspects of environmental policy cooperation in the Nistru river basin, the state of ecosystems and natural resources in the basin, the measures taken to effectively manage natural resources, protection of biological and landscape diversity, challenges and constraints for improving the environmental situation and ways to overcome them, issues of public participation in the formulation and implementation of environmental measures, as well as the reform of water management in the light of harmonization with European legislation.

The conference notes a lack of positive changes in the ecological status of the River, criticizes current policies, notes a lack of implementation of agreed upon measures and encourages increased public participation in finding, formulating and implementing solutions for the present problems.

The NGO forum, in continuance of the conference, formulated a resolution demanding greater public participation and urging the government to fulfill their duties regarding water management and transboundary cooperation.
