First Meeting of the drafting Group on Guidelines on Water Supply and Sanitation in Extreme Weather Events

The Drafting Group on Guidelines on Water Supply and Sanitation in Extreme Weather Events held a meeting on October 22nd, 2008 in Ministry of Health, Madrid, Spain.

The development of guidelines is to provide operational elements to support the management of administrative decisions, organization, operational skills and capacities to implement adaptation policies, strategies and coping capacities of the society and communities in this area.

Guidelines will also include:

  • Risk awareness and assessment including environment and health hazard and vulnerability/capacity analysis;
  • Knowledge development including education, training, research and information;
  • Early warning systems including forecasting, dissemination of warnings, preparedness measures and reaction capacities.

The Madrid meeting drafting group discussed the proposed structure and extended abstract of the paragraphs of the guidelines. Partners were asked to edit specific chapters besides contribution all along the text and explore timelines/meetings schedule according also to available funding.

AWHHE will provide information/case study for Chapter 3, subchapter 3.3.2 on Case of decentralized and community-based sanitation systems. Provided information will include definition of ecological sanitation and case study of Armenian on implementation of dry urine diverting toilets.

AWHHE also will develop whole chapter 9 on Communication in extreme weather events: importance of a communication strategy; communicating at different levels-household, industry, public; and communication tools.

The second meeting of the guidelines drafting group is scheduled for February 23-28, 2009 in Rome.
