The way to Cancun: WECF Feasibility study on CDM presented at UNFCCC side event
“Gender and Climate Change research: gaps, questions, and potentials” was the title of an event co-organised by WECF, Bridge, Gendercc, Life E.v. and the Gender and Disaster Network

WECF contributed to this side event with an introduction by Energy Coordinator Sabine Bock and a presentation by Robert Müller, Cooperation Partner of Women in Europe for a Common Future WECF talking on ‘CDM funding for household and community level projects – a chance to increase women’s access to global climate funding?’ And asking whether there is a need for simplified CDM rules? Progress has been achieved and recommendations have been made for small projects, energy projects below 5 megawatt for example.
The side event introduced the state of the art in gender and climate change research in general and more specific in particular research fields, discuss questions arising from recent studies and present suggestions how to improve the situation. It gave an outline, a rough picture of what we have now on research on climate change and gender issues and the challenges we face.
Apart from WECF the panel consisted of Gotelind Alber, GenderCC – Women for Climate Justice and Ulrike Roehr, LIFE – Equality Environment Education, Maira Zahur / Gender & Disaster Network GenderCC, Pakistan with a presentation on Disasters, conflict, migration: a complex relationship and Alyson Brody from BRIDGE.
Zahur focussed on the importance of creating a linkage between the larger bodies involved in climate change policies, the sharing of knowledge. Alyson Brody from BRIDGE/Institute for Development Studies, University of Sussex talked about “Innovative processes and approaches: The Cutting Edge Programme on
Gender and Climate Change Facilitation”. Alison Brody focussed on how climate change exacerbates poverty. How limited access to resources deepens the effects of climate change? What particular constraints do people suffer, particularly women. Although knowledge of both women and men is valued equally.
Presentation feasibility study
Poor communities in developing and emerging countries have hardly been able to access funding via the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) for climate change mitigation measures. At the same time, many low-income communities have limited access to sustainable energy which restricts their opportunities for economic development and education.
In this study, we analyze the potential of CDM as a funding mechanism for household and community based projects (further on called HH projects). We provide practical guidelines on CDM for institutions working with HH projects. At the same time, we make suggestions how CDM should be improved to be more accessible for household and community based projects.
The study covers household and community based projects in general; for practical examples, we focus on the Caucasus and Central Asia region (further on called CCA region), which is the target area of the work of WECF.
