Refreshing trainings and discussions in Sabirabad
The training was a part of the project “ Community approaches to a better environment for all and poverty reduction in out of reach communities of rural Azerbaijan“ which takes place for a second year in Azerbaijan. The participants were instructed about the working principles and use for drying fruits and vegetables.
WECF long term partner from Georgia presented good practices and examples from the country in terms of drying fruits and vegetables which can be used in Azerbaijan as well. For the training several owners of fruit trees were selected, as well as other villagers who expressed interest in the subject. The fruits they are producing and which remain unsold and unused in the households get wasted each year. With these fruit dryer the owners can conserve their fruit in a hygienic way, conserve them for winter or sell them in local markets. The introduction of fruit dryers was identified among the needs assessments held in the rural areas of Azerbaijan and after the exposure visit to Georgia by the local project participants. They expressed the desire to learn how to build different cabinet dryers that have bigger capacities than the simple dryer built last year.
While being in the region, WECF coordinators monitored the demonstration objects that have been installed last year. The solar collector provides hot water after initial difficulties. Local trained staff could do reparations in order to ensure proper working. The only problem is that the water is evaporating very fast due to the high temperatures and the expansion tank has to be filled almost daily.
The solar destilator provides about 8 liters of clean drinking water per day. The fruit dryer is being used intensively by the farmer. He is very enthusiastic: ‘The fruits are drying so fast now even when I put a full bucket. And the taste is just wonderfully aromatic’.
The public toilet is used by the local authorities, a local nursery and a shop. The toilet is well constructed by a local trained person. There are start up problems such as users not covering the faeces with dry material. But with a couple more refreshing trainings these problems are likely to be solved.
