Elisabeth Ruffinengo, Advocacy manager WECF France
WECF attended the Biocide Symposium organised by Chemical Watch on authorisation of biocidal products in the European Union that took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 11th to 13th May.
Elisabeth Ruffinengo, WECF Advocacy Manager, was invited to speak about sustainable use of biocides and drew attention of participants to the importance of adopting a precautionary approach to reduce impacts of biocidal products on human health and the environment. She underlined key elements like the implementation and enforcement of existing Biocidal Products Regulation provisions and the promotion of non chemical and non toxic alternatives and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
She stressed that on the way towards a sustainable use of biocides, embodied in innovative concepts and alternatives, there are various obstacles, such as poor consumers awareness and investment in IPM, that need to be addressed by member states, European authorities and industry stakeholders.
