Issues: Energy & Climate
Duration: 06/2010 - 07/2011

WECF and other German environmental organisations are questioning citizens on their views on prolongation of the use of existing nuclear power plants, retention of nuclear consensus on phasing out in the long term or even a faster phase out of nuclear power.

The postcards will be send out amongst others by WECF  in the next days and weeks in small amounts to  Chancellor Angela Merkel. With each sending, the environmental organisations will inform her with remarkable  firgures in the field of renewable energy or Nuclear power.

About two thirds of German voters want a withdrawal from nuclear energy. They try to influence policy makers by going to the streets or writing letters to the government. This  postcard campaign for Mrs. Merkel is part of this. On the postcards people can choose between three options: runtime extensions, retention of nuclear consensus or even a more rapid phase-out. On 24 June to 21 postcards were sent to Mrs Merkel.

Meanwhile, about 1,200 postcards have been received by the environmental organisations. More than 4,000 postcards are on their way and are being distributed. Almost all people are calling for a consistent and rapid promotion of renewable energy and want to maintain the nuclear consensus as planned, or vote for an even more rapid phase-out. According to conservative estimates the statements are supported by more than 17,000 people. The action was initiated by “Energie in Buergerhand“, “mothers against nuclear power“, “projekt21plus“ and  WECF Germany e.V.

As an example: Relevant figures for the first postcard on day one:
  • If 0.000001 grams of plutonium reaches the lungs of a person he or she will get cancer.
  • 1 minute exposure to an unshielded fuel rod is sufficient to obtain a lethal dose.
  • The nuclear power plant Krümmel earns approximately € 1 million profit per day.
