Background
The Division for Sustainable Development provides leadership and is an authoritative source of expertise within the United Nations system on sustainable development. It promotes sustainable development as the substantive secretariat to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and through technical cooperation and capacity building at international, regional and national levels.Find out more...
WECF became involved in the Commission work in 2004 during the preparation for the 13th session of the CSD. The topics covered the human right to safe water, gender mainstreaming and governance.
WECF goals
Water, sanitation and gender are the major issues around WECF's commitment to the CSD process. The goals are to fully integrate women's concerns and issues within the policy framework of sustainable development.WECF believes that a failure to integrate and respect the needs of women in development processes will make these processes less effective and even harmul to humans and the environment.
WECF implementation
The CSD event offers different ways of participation and involvement. WECF organises and hosts side-events, preparetory meetings in member countries, produces policy papers and ensures the participation of network members.The network organisations are crucial in providing input and formulating policy papers and action plans. Representatives from the organisations take part in the sessions and contribute through interventions and statements.
WECF involvement in policy formulation occures to a large degree in the Major Groups. They are responsible for engaging and liaising with major groups sectors and for enhancing participation in the work of CSD and in its intersessional processes.
The WECF network is part of the Womens Major Group. This group concerns itself with the full, equal and beneficial integration of women in all development activities, in particular the Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women, which emphasize women's participation in national and international ecosystem management and control of environment degradation.
