Kernenergie veilig? laat je niets wijsmaken

WECF kent uit de eigen ervaring van lidorganisaties de lange termijn gevolgen van nucleaire rampen. Veel van de gevolgen blijven onderbelicht, zoals die op de gezondheid, die we meemaken in bijvoorbeeld Rusland en Oekraïne. Juist ook voor meisjes en vrouwen blijken de lange termijn gevolgen van blootstelling aan (zelfs vrij lage) radioactieve straling nare lange termijn gevolgen te hebben voor hun vruchtbaarheid en gezondheid.( Onderzoek gepresenteerd in 2006 door het Oekraïense Nationale Instituut voor Gynaecologie, verloskunde en kindergeneeskunde).
De regering denkt dat hier in Nederland een kernongeval met schade voor de wijde omgeving niet zal plaatsvinden. Men wil doorgaan met de bouw van nieuwe kerncentrales. Hoewel men op de hoogte is van het feit dat in de centrale van Borssele in de afgelopen jaren al 372 bedrijfsstoringen hebben plaatsgevonden, sommige licht en snel beheersbaar, ontwikkelden anderen zich bijna tot een grote ramp (gegevens van de Kernfysische Dienst geanalyseerd en gepubliceerd door Herman Damveld maart 2011).
In augustus 2011 vond er een ontploffing plaats bij een Franse atoomfabriek in Marcoule, dichtbij Orange en Avignon. Hoewel de schade uiteindelijk beperkt bleef tot een dode en enkele gewonden, werd er in de Franse media wel veel aandacht gegeven aan de risico’s van de 58 kerncentrales in Frankrijk. De kranten berichtten dat er vorig jaar al duizend ongelukken waren gebeurd in deze centrales.
In Duitsland stelde de regering na de kernramp in Japan een adviescommissie in van onafhankelijke deskundigen, die binnen enkele maanden advies uitbracht om niet verder te gaan met kernenergie. De regering nam het dappere besluit om de oude kerncentrales te sluiten en de overige kerncentrales geleidelijk te vervangen door veilige en duurzame energieopwekking. Bij deze beslissing hebben zowel economische als veiligheidsargumenten een rol gespeeld. Gelden die argumenten niet voor Nederland?
